Artist Statement / bio

Joe Cimino is a time-based media artist, musician, and educator whose work investigates the entanglement between history, familial relationships, memory, and the environment, as well as how they play a role in influencing human perception. Through layering historical evidence guided by intuitive sensing, he questions how moments lost to time can be conjured back into existence for one to witness and experience. In his work, Cimino often layers family photographs, music, archival imagery, household objects, and recognizable media tropes to bring attention to what has gone overlooked. Through time-based media paired with his practice-based research, Cimino utilizes collage-like layering through multi-media materials to explore transparent moments of history, often bringing the past, present, and displaced future into a singular moment.
