Artist Statement / bio
Joe Cimino is a time-based media artist and musician whose work investigates what familiar materials and experiences reveal about human perception and how they play a role in determining what goes unnoticed. Utilizing historical evidence harmonized with intuitive sensing, he questions how moments lost to time can be conjured back into existence for one to witness and experience. In his work, Cimino utilizes familiar materials such as documentaries, music, household objects, and recognizable media tropes to ignite a sense of recognition for what has gone overlooked in daily life. Through time-based media paired with his practice-based research, Cimino brings the background to the foreground, asking us to see beyond the regular and to reflect upon the hidden histories of what goes unnoticed.
